So what next?

Unless (Until?) FIDE changes the rules again...

FIDE Champion Anand will play a match against former champion Kramnik in 2008.

Topalov (who was left out of the Mexico WC tournament) will play the winner of the FIDE World Cup (which will be from 11/22/2007 to 12/18/2007 in Khanty-Mansiysk) to become the challenger to the winner of the Anand-Kramnik match.

This system is completely illogical. Anand is going to play in the World Cup. If he wins, does he then have to play a match with Topalov in addition to his match with Kramnik? And what if he does and he wins them both? Does he then have to play a match against himself? Absurd!

The implosion of the chess universe was prevented by the fact that Anand did NOT play in the World Cup.
